My strong print media background, organisation skills, creative abilities and long involvement in the visitor and newspaper industries has provided me with some fantastic opportunities over the years; not only to hone my writing, editorial and sub-editing skills, but to meet people from all walks of life and cultures, form excellent networks and develop strong management skills. These career opportunities have given me ‘hands on’ knowledge across a variety of specialist areas outside traditional print media including websites, photography and DVD production.

Jill Marshall Media Ltd was once again contracted by the Rotorua District Council to project manage a fourth issue of the HIP booklet aimed at Rotorua residents aged 50 and over. Extended to 28 pages for the April-October 2011 edition, the project involved many aspects of brochure production from sourcing artwork quotes to collating and prioritising material and imagery through to proofing and plotter proof colour checking.

Events & Venues Rotorua

Assisted with the proofing plus also reviewed layout and imagery choices for Events & Venues Rotorua newest venues brochure. An important sales and marketing tool in New Zealand and offshore, it was essential that the brochure projected a highly professional image that reflected the quality of service offered by the Events & Venues team and the international standard venues they manage.

Regional Tourism Organisation (RTO), for six and half years.

I stepped into the RTO role from New Zealand’s oldest weekly visitor newspaper, Thermalair, where I was Editor/Manager for 20 years. Previously I wrote a weekly column for the Rotorua Daily Post as well as working in the marketing department and, prior to that, was with The Daily News in Taranaki.

Mountain Jade website

The former Jade Factory website underwent a complete revamp in 2010. Jill Marshall Media Ltd was contracted to research and write interesting and informative text for the new site that was interesting yet emotive, thereby introducing a new wave of contemporary buyers to this most ancient and precious of stones. Subjects ranged from the ancient uses and beliefs tied to this revered stone and sourcing proverbs, facts and interesting tidbits about jade and jade-ite to discovering the company’s challenging journey to discover global sources of high quality, raw material and the owners’ personal passion for jade.

Achievements/responsibilities at DRTM
(March 2003- Sept 2009)

  • Wrote, edited and published the bi-annual In Essence trade and media publication, gathering, writing and editing 35-40 stories per issue.
  • Wrote, edited and produced monthly e-newsletters of 5000-6000 words.
  • Assisted in the planning, photography, proofing and publication of marketing collateral including the Rotorua Visitor Guide, Events Guide, Product Manual and Trade and Convention Planner.
  • Oversaw the complete overhaul (twice) of the website – January 2008 and April 2004
  • Project managed all aspects of inaugural 2009 Spirit of Rotorua photographic competition with sponsorship in excess of $12,000.
  • Developed a Rotorua map from planning to publication.
  • Project managed the translation and launch of six stand-alone foreign language websites – Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French and German.
  • Project managed the development of new destinational, trade, conference and incentive DVDs, translated the destinational version into six languages.
